The Council for Tobacco Treatment Training Programs (CTTTP) is committed to supporting Tobacco Treatment Specialist (TTS) training that develops professional skills through continuing education (CE). This accreditation process enables the Council to recognize and promote learning opportunities that meet a defined set of criteria. Accreditation will serve as a guide to tobacco treatment providers searching for reliable and evidence-based CE programs, especially those having completed a CTTTP-accredited TTS training program.  Continued professional development is widely recognized as a fundamental way to enhance growth, improve skills and ensures academic and practical qualifications are current.

What are the benefits to CE being accredited by CTTTP?

  • Accreditation demonstrates that the educational event has met an established set of standards directly related to professional development for tobacco treatment practitioners.
  • The CTTTP website is a resource for continuing education opportunities. Accredited programs are highlighted and promoted here.
  • Approximately 2,000 practitioners complete a CTTTP accredited TTS Training Program annually. These TTS receive e-mail notice of accredited continuing education programs.
  • The CTTTP logo and accreditation status can be used in program marketing.
  • Completion of a CTTTP accredited TTS Training Program is considered the minimal training for current TTS credentialing. Demand for valid continuing education opportunities will increase when the next level of TTS credentialing is implemented.

What topics can be approved?

Continuing education topics should provide advanced training and skill development related to any of the areas of tobacco treatment specialist core competencies. These competencies and definitions are listed in the application.

What kind of support can the CTTTP provide?

  • The management and volunteers of the CTTTP want your CE program to be successful. Please send us your questions and we will provide support as best we can.
  • If you are considering applying for CE accreditation, we are happy to answer questions about any part of the application.
  • After your application is reviewed you will be notified of any items that are missing, provided guidance on what is required and when the missing items are due.

No one in my organization is a credentialed TTS. Why is this required, and can we still apply?

  • The requirement to include a credentialed TTS in the planning process is modeled after many well-established CE/CME approval processes.
  • The credentialed TTS does not need to be part of your organization. The TTS must review and approve the goals and objectives for the program and their name and contact must be included in the application.
  • If you cannot find a credentialed TTS from another organization, contact CTTTP and we will assist in finding someone who can help.
